Poet, dramatist and historian. Born Sussex. Commissioned by the House of Commons to compose a History of the Parliament, published 1647. A supporter of the regicides. Buried Westminster Abbey.
When Charles II was restored to the throne he ordered the disinterment of the bodies of Oliver Cromwell and his supporters, including May, and their reburial in an unmarked pit in St Margaret's churchyard, Westminster.
