Alexander Swan Jones was born on 1 November 1907 in Liverpool, Lancashire, the second of the three children of Oliver Parker Jones (1877-1940) and Ann Jones née Swan (1879-1956). His birth was registered in the 4th quarter of 1907 in the West Derby registration district, Lancashire. He was baptised on 9 January 1908 at St John's Church, Waterloo, Liverpool, where the baptismal register shows the family were living at 70 Norway Street, Liverpool and that his father was a carpenter.
When his father completed his 1911 census return form he is shown as living in three rooms at 43 Westminster Road, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, with his parents and both siblings: Philip Oliver Jones (1906-1974) and Irene Jones (b.1910). His father described himself as a joiner.
Postal Sevice Appointment Books show that he was employed as a postman/mail porter on 27 July 1939 in the London Postal Service.
He married Irene Beatrice Denyer (b.1918) in the 4th quarter of 1939 in the Westminster registration district.
He was serving as a Trooper in The Life Guards, service number 294702, when he died on war service, aged 33 years, on 12 September 1941. His body was buried in Plot 6, Row D, Grave 12 in the Tehran War Cemetery, Gholhak Garden, Tehran, Persia (now Iran).
Probate records show that his address had been Frogmore, Church Crescent, Church End, Finchley, London, N3 and that administration was granted to his widow on 6 January 1942. His effects totalled £398-7s-0d.
