From : "The Vikings' homeland was Scandinavia: modern Norway, Sweden and Denmark. ... What we call the Viking Age, and their relationship with England, lasted from approximately 800 to 1150 AD .... Their expansion during the Viking Age took the form of warfare, exploration, settlement and trade. ... From around 860AD onwards, Vikings stayed, settled and prospered in Britain."

The Vikings are also known as Danes or Norsemen. King Alfred fought the Vikings, as did King Athelstan and King Ethelred. The Dane, Canute, became King of England.

Having fought off a Viking invasion in the north King Harold immediately had to fight a Norman invasion in the south. And we all know how that turned out.
