West Berlin

A political exclave within the German Democratic Republic. Although politically affiliated with West Germany it was administered by American, British and French occupying forces. It was completely separated when the East Germans built the Berlin Wall in 1961. Following the collapse of Communism in the Eastern Bloc in 1989, the wall was destroyed. Berlin became the capital of the re-unified East and West Germany in 1990.
