Wilfred Sidney Hattemore

Wilfred Sidney Hattemore

Member of Hackney's Maternity and Child Welfare Committee in 1938.

Wilfred Sidney Hattemore was born on 20 March 1902 in Walthamstow, Essex (now Greater London), the elder child of Frederick Sidney Hattemore (1875-1957) and Alice Maud Hattemore née Reynolds (1872-1962). His birth was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1902 in the West Ham Registration District, Essex (now Greater London).

He is shown on the census return form that was completed by his father on 2 April 1911 as aged 9 years and living in two rooms within 133 Bentham Road, Homerton, South Hackney, London, with his parents and his sister, Doris Maud Hattemore (1906-2004). His father described himself as an insurance agent.

When his father enlisted on 31 May 1916 in the Hampshire Regiment, his service papers show that the family were living at 37 Wick Road, Homerton.

The census return form that was completed by his father on 19 June 1921 shows him as aged 19 years, 2 months and a general clerk employed by T. R. Thomas & Co., dairy agents at 147 Strand, London, WC. He was still living in the four roomed property at 37 Wick Road, Homerton, with his parents and his sister, Doris Maud Hattemore who was described as a millinery machinist employed by Millar & Co., milliners, at Victoria Works, Darnley Road, Hackney. His father described himself as boot repairing, working on his own account and his mother was listed as on home duties.

Electoral registers from 1923 to 1939 list him at 37 Wick Road, Homerton and he was still there when the England and Wales Register was compiled on 29 September 1939, which confirms his date of birth as 20 March 1902. It also shows him as a clerk and additionally as a member of Air Raid Precautions at Hackney Metropolitan Borough Council. His father was described as a shop keeper boot repairer whilst his mother was listed as permanently incapacitated.

Electoral registers from 1945 show him and his parents listed at 41 Banister House, Priestley Street, London, E9.

His death, aged 46 years, on 17 January 1949 at Hackney Hospital, Homerton High Street, London, E9, was registered in the 1st quarter of 1949 in the Hackney Registration District, London. His body was buried on 24 January 1949 in Section F14 in Chingford Mount Cemetery, 121 Old Church Road, London, E4 6ST.

He is shown as 'Councillor W. S. Hattemore' on the Maternity and Child Welfare Centre memorial stone at the Elsdale Street Surgery, 28 Elsdale Street, London, E9 6QY.
