Wilfrid Scawen Blunt

Diplomat, poet, hedonist and traveller. Born Petworth House, Sussex. Advocated anti-Imperialism, and supported Irish nationalism. Legendary womaniser, one being William Morris's wife, Jane. Married for 37 years to Lady Anne Lytton, Byron's granddaughter via Ada Lovelace, with whom he founded the Crabbett Park Arabian Stud. Failed to enter parliament 3 times, on one occasion running his campaign from prison in Ireland. Distantly related to Anthony Blunt, the spy. Died Southwater, Sussex.

"Pleasure is duty, duty pleasure
In equal measure."

2025: We had published that Wilfrid was grand-uncle to Anthony Blunt, the spy. We are grateful to Diane Darcy who wrote to correct this, telling us that "they would have been 4th cousins". Diane also supplied the nodes on the tree connecting them.
