William Abeling

Clockmaker, lived and worked Wynyatt Street and in 1820 installed a watchmakers window.

From the Keeper of the Clockmakers' Museum at Guildhall:
"William Abeling (sic) was not a member of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, so sadly I have no manuscript information on him. He is however listed in "Brittens Old Clocks, Watches and their Makers" (9th edition, Bloomsbury 1986). The sources were London street directories - and the dates given will be the dates that Abeling chose to advertise in the directories, rather than the dates of his birth and death. The entry reads:

Abeling (Abelling), William, 1817-42;
7 Wynatt st, Clerkenwell 1817-23;
36 Spencer st 1835-42.

It appears that G.H.Baillie ("Clock and Watchmakers of the World") knew of a bracket clock by him."

Our colleague, Jamie Davis, found .

Since publishing this plaque a correspondent wrote: "Elizabeth Abeling believed to be the daughter of William was married to John Wilmin Figg the famous Silversmith of 6 Denmark St in Islington in 1840 (Islington 3 169). John Wilmin is my wife's maternal GGGGrandfather."
