Awarded the VC for his heroism on 18 September 1918, age 23, while serving in the Machine Gun Corps. "Three times he charged ahead and captured enemy guns and positions. His example of fearless and unhesitating devotion to duty under great personal danger inspired his troops and had a marked effect on the battle. (Gouzeaucourt, France)".
