William C. Plant

Fireman killed as a result of an air raid on Old Palace School, Bow, E3 on 20 April 1941.

Our colleague Andrew Behan has kindly researched this man: Auxiliary Fireman William Charles Plant was born on 29 August 1914 in Croydon, Surrey. His mother's maiden name was Jarvis. In 1938 he married Matilda L Proud in Bromley, Kent and the 1939 England and Wales register show her name spelt Matilder L Plant and gives his occupation as Plumbers Mate. Their son, also called William Charles Plant was born on 20 February 1939 and they lived at 22 Sultan Road, Beckenham, Kent.

He joined the Auxiliary Fire Service and was attached to the Elmers End Fire Station. He died when a German bomb landed on Auxiliary Fire Service Sub Station 24U, which was housed in Old Palace LCC School, St. Leonards Street, Poplar, aged 26 years, on 20 April 1941. He was buried at Beckenham Cemetery and Crematorium, Elmers End Road, Beckenham, BR3 4TD.
