Our colleague Andrew Behan has researched this man: Private William Henry Turner was born in 1890, a son of John Edward Turner and Ellen Clara Turner. His father was a bootmaker. The 1891 census shows the family living at 21 Hanover Street, St Pancras and the 1901 census records the family at 12 Hanover Street, St Pancras. He enlisted into the 6th (Service) Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment, service number 13077 and entered France on 30 July 1915. On 12 September 1916 he married Ellen Elizabeth Pooley at St Andrew's Church, Haverstock Hill, Camden and their marriage records show that they were living at 14 St Thomas Gardens, Queens Crescent, London, NW. He was transferred to the 7th (Service) Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, retaining his service number.
He died of his wounds on 23 July 1917, aged 27 years, at the No.13 General Hospital, Boulogne, France and was buried in Grave IV.A.37 at the Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Rue de Dringhen, Boulogne-Sur-Mer, Pas de Calais, France. Unusually his headstone, like all the others in this cemetery, is laid flat due to the sandy soil. On 20 December 1917 his widow, who was living at 2 College Lane, Highgate Road, Kentish Town, received his back pay of £7-16s-2d and on 6 June 1919 was awarded his War Gratuity of £13-10s-0d. He was posthumously awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal 1914-1918 and the Victory Medal.
