Awarded the VC for his heroism on 27-28 August 1918, age 39, while serving in the 24th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. "Appreciating the vital importance of his position, by sheer personality he inspired his men and led them forward to secure objectives. The next day through valorous leadership he finally established a strong defensive position. (Chérisy, France)". Freemason at: â„–374, Saint Paul’s Lodge.
