William J. E. Tenwick

Able Seaman William James Edward Tenwick. He was born on 2 November 1902, in Southwark, the eldest son of William and Maud Caroline Tenwick, née Sanders. His father was a Printing Roller Maker. He was baptised on 7 December 1902 at St Paul's Church, Westminster Bridge Road, Southwark and the family were living at 181 Brook Street, Southwark. The 1911 census shows him living at 16 Addison Road, Bromley, Kent.

In 1926 he married Ivy Saunders in West Ham. He joined the Royal Navy, service number C/JX320246, and was killed in action on 13 June 1944, aged 41 years, serving aboard HMS Boadicea (H65), a B class destroyer, that was sunk 16 miles south west of Portland Bill, Dorset, by two aerial torpedoes dropped by a Junkers JU88 bomber whilst escorting a convoy of merchant ships to France. The torpedoes caused a magazine explosion and HMS Boadicea sunk quickly with only 12 of her 182 crew surviving. His body was washed ashore and recovered near Tyneham, Dorset and he was buried on 11 July 1944 in Section B, Row O, Grave 28 in Wareham Cemetery, Conniger Lane, Wareham, Dorset. At the time of his death he had been living with his wife at 42 St Georges Road, Leyton, Essex and probate was granted to her. His effects totalled £144.
