William T. H. Challen

Died aged five years. Andrew Behan has kindly carried out some research on this little boy. William Thomas Henry Challen was born on 8 December 1911 in Poplar, the son of William Samuel Challen and Jessie Challen, née Gould. His father was a Dock Labourer. On 21 February 1912 he was baptised in the name of William Thomas Harry Challen at St Stephen's Church, Tredegar Road, Bow and the family were living at 3 Parnell Road, Bow. They moved to 39 Pekin Street, Poplar and he was killed, aged 5 years, on 13 June 1917 when a bomb fell on Upper North Street School, Poplar, during a German aircraft raid, killing 18 children. He was buried on 20 June 1917 in a mass grave at the East London Cemetery and Crematorium, 260a Grange Road, Plaistow.
