Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Composer. Born as Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart at 9 Getreidegasse, Salzburg in modern day Austria. (Amadeus was a sort of nickname). His father, Leopold was a prominent musician, who took his family on a sometimes gruelling tour of Europe, displaying the talents of his son.

They took lodgings in Cecil Court, but when Leopold became seriously ill in July the family moved to the country air of Five Fields Row, now Ebury Street. They stayed for about 7 weeks at the house of Dr Randall, No.180 Ebury Street, which was among the first residential properties built in the area. (This paragraph is from an information board near the Orange Square statue).

During their 16-month visit to London (23 April 1764 - 1 August 1765) the young Mozart was heavily influenced by Johann Christian Bach. He became court musician at the Salzburg court, and in 1781 he moved to Vienna. His prolific output includes 20 operas and between 40 and 49 symphonies. Died in Vienna.

2019: has a good account of Mozart's visit to London.
