A sheltered housing block of eight flats. The plaque says they were originally founded in 1731, although who manage the accommodation, give the establishment date as 1679.
gives the history of these alms houses. Briefly: they originated 1621 in Rope Yard Rails which is shown on this , about where Beresford Street now is. A bequest in 1679 allowed the site to be enlarged. In 1731 the alms houses were demolished and replaced by a parish workhouse. This was closed in 1841 and Rev. William Greenlaw arranged for the site to be redeveloped as a row of nine parish alms houses.
Bomb damaged in WW2 the whole area was cleared and redeveloped after the war. The Woolwich Parochial Alms Houses were rebuilt in Greenlaw Street in 1958.
Lost Hospitals describes the Rope Yard Rails Alms Houses as "2-storeys high and modestly Tudoresque in appearance". With that description in mind we think this Pinterest photo, dated as 1957, probably shows that building prior to demolition, despite being captioned as "Woolwich Parochial Almshouses, Woolwich High Street 1957".
