Bevington fountain

Erection date: 1882

Inscription

{Incised on a red granite panel on the west side:}
Erected in the year 1882 by Colonel S. B. Bevington, first Mayor of Bermondsey in memory of his father, James Buckington Bevington JP of Neckinger Mills, Bermondsey, Born 1804.  Died 1892.

{Monogram carved in the stone gable ends:}
J B B

Why (Oh why, oh why) do people chose dark, coloured granite for inscriptions? The mottling in the granite can make the text almost impossible to read. One shouldn't have to use fingers to read an inscription. This can't have been how those clever Victorians intended it to be so we guess that the letters were originally picked out in paint, gold or black, and it's been lost over time.
