Fountain

Burdett-Coutts - Victoria Park - fountain

Erection date: 1862

Inscription

{In heavily italicised writing across 3 sides:}
The Victoria Fountain given Anno Domini 1862 by Angela Georgina Burdett-Coutts for the love of God and country.

This extravaganza in Victorian gothic with Moorish touches was designed by Darbishire and given by Burdett-Coutts. The four podgy little cherubs, all different, can be seen . Our 2012 close-up picture shows that the fountain is a) not working and b) in a parlous state, but also that it is a delight.

E9, Victoria Park

2016: We've replaced our 2012 dull and cold-looking photos with those our colleague, Alan Patient, took on his sunny visit.

In the 19th century this was the site of the East End's own Speakers' Corner.
