Cheyne House - gate piers

Site: Cheyne House - gate piers (1 memorial)

SW3, Upper Cheyne Row, 10

We read the 's post about one artist's obsession with painting the large and ornamental gate piers at the entrance to Cheyne House. Six different paintings does rather speak of obsession, but the paintings are so lovely we were inspired to search out any remains of the gate piers, and were stunned to find these remnants, subsumed into a garden wall.

From old maps (e.g. ) it looks like Cheyne House was about where number 14 now is (3 houses to the left, west), and probably extended northwards, at least halfway to what is now the east-west section of Glebe Place. On these maps you can see the garden and the driveway, the gates of which would have been supported by these piers.
