City of London Tavern and the RNLI

Inscription

{Below the RNLI logo:}
Lifeboats
On this site, where formerly stood the City of London Tavern, the Royal National Life Boat Institution was founded as a voluntary body at a meeting held on 4th March, 1824, presided over by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Charles Manners-Sutton.

Site: City of London Tavern and the RNLI (1 memorial)

EC2, Bishopsgate, 22

The plaque is laid into the pavement outside the entrance to Horizon 22, that's the foyer with the pink lights that you can see in our photo.

The plaque however is in the wrong place.  The correct location is about 150m to the west, see our page for the Tavern.  Presumably this historic marker was part of the agreed when the skyscraper 22 Bishopsgate was given planning permission.

We found this . It contains: "The commemorative RNLI plaque on the former building on the site and proposed Crosby Hall plaque shall be installed and retained for the life of the building on the new building in accordance with detailed specifications including location, position and fixing details which shall be submitted to and approved in writing by the Local Planning Authority prior to commencement of the works affected thereby. REASON: In the interest of visual amenity and to maintain the historic and cultural interest of the site ... ".  Do they know but just not care that it's in the wrong place?

However the incorrect placement of the plaque has provided the RNLI with a unique funding opportunity:  has "Did you know that @rnli was founded on the same grounds that 22 Bishopsgate is standing on today? If you look closely, you can find their plaque in the ground between our south entrance and the Horizon 22 entrance Each year we host the RNLI #TowerRun to raise awareness and funds for the organisation. ..."
