Monument

Croydon war memorial

Erection date: 22/10/1921

Inscription

{On the front, near the top of the pylon:}
1914 - 1918
1939 - 1945
{Lower down:}
and in memory of those who lost their lives in wars and conflicts since.

On the plinth section:}
A tribute to the men and women of Croydon who died and suffered.

To the left of the monument is a sculpture of a wounded soldier and to the right, a woman clutching a child and variously identified as holding out a bandage for the soldier, or as a recent widow holding the bad news letter in her outstretched hand.

This soldier of the East Surrey Regiment is bandaging his arm, not, as anyone familiar with modern films might think, injecting himself with heroin. The recognition given to women and the home front in both the sculpture and the inscription is unusual.

Architect: James Burford, sculptor:Paul Montford.

At you can see this memorial before WW2 was added.
