SE10, Cutty Sark Gardens

The plaque can be seen in the lower left of our photo. 'Cutty Sark Gardens' sounds like a sarky name for a large area which is almost entirely paved.

The Cutty Sark is a British clipper ship. Built in Scotland in 1869, one of the last tea clippers to be built and one of the fastest. Named after the short shirt of a fictional witch in Robert Burns' poetry. Moved to this custom-built dry dock in 1954.

2007 the ship was badly damaged by fire just as a major conservation project was about to begin. This is such a common occurrence with restoration projects that one wonders why the risk is not adequately mitigated.
