Statue

Francis Bacon

Erection date: 1910

Inscription

{On the front of the stone plinth, a laurel wreath around:}
Francis Bacon 1561 - 1626
{There seems to be some doubt on the date of birth since the last digit is actually given as 0/1}

{On the left-hand face:}
MP for Middlesex 1593
Solicitor General 1607
Attorney General 1613
Lord Keeper 1617
Lord Chancellor 1618

{On the back:}
The Essays: Instauratio Magna et Novum Organum, History of the Reign of Henry VII, De Dignitate et Aligmentis Scientiarum.

{On the right-hand face:}
Student of this Inn 1576
Barrister 1582
Reader 1588
Dean of Chapel 1589
Treasurer 1608 - 1617

{On the edge of the statue's base:}
F.W. Pomeroy A.R.A. Sculpt. 1910

Erected to mark the tercentenary of Bacon's election as Treasurer of the Inn in 1608. 2 years late after 300 - forgivable?.

has some photos showing this area immediately after the WW2 bomb damage.  The pre-war buildings have a character that their replacements totally lack.
