Inscription

Birthplace of Charles G. Gordon. C. B. Major General Royal Engineers. Born January 28, 1833; died at Khartoum January 26, 1885.
This memorial was erected by the Woolwich Antiquarian Society January 28, 1900.

At our request Rosemary and Richard Christophers of , previously Woking Museum, put paid to the rumour that the plaque is held by that museum. They also kindly inquired of Gordon's School whether it is held there, but no, the School don't have it either.

So we thought it well and truly lost but then we came across with a photo and a pointer to where we found it, entitled "Greenwich Heritage Centre, Woolwich - RA & RMA exhibition 15" and captioned with "... Collection of the . On loan to a semi-permanent exhibition dedicated to the Royal Artillery and Royal Military Academy in Greenwich Heritage Centre, Woolwich, south east London, UK."

So 'lost' only in the sense that it is not at its intended site, but kept safely by people who care for it.

The house is long gone. Before its demolition in 1971-2, the house had boasted, at different times, two plaques commemorating Gordon's birth. See General Gordon's birth place - lost plaque, blue for the other one and for more information about the building.

The photo of the house showing the plaque above the door, c.1920, is credited to Mike Lewis and comes from .
