E1, railway track

In March 2013 we were contacted by Tony King who had finally decided to do something to discover what the strange carved stonework was that he saw beside the track every day on his commute into Liverpool Street Station. He wrote to us; we wrote to our contact at Network Rail, Tom Fernley who had previously helped us with the Gresley plaque at King's Cross. Tom had the answer: they are architectural salvage from a building, Harwich House, that was demolished when Liverpool Street Station was restored and extended 1985-92. Tom says the stonework was somewhat overgrown until a few years ago when Network Rail cleared the undergrowth and carried out repairs.

Tony's photos show 2 of the 6 stone pieces that he has seen there: a pillared pavilion (to the left) and a cartouche (to the right). Two of the pavilions can be seen in the photo of Harwich House. We can't see the cartouche on Harwich House but others (salvaged or copied) can be seen on the current Liverpool Steet Station - on the towers at the Liverpool Street and Bishopsgate entrances.
