The lost plaque was erected on the Chancery Lane elevation of Thurloe's home, 24 Old Square, later 24 Old Buildings, near the Gatehouse, in 1890. It was removed around the time of rebuilding work which took place in 1968-9.
The Cromwell Society plaque is in roughly the same place as the original plaque.
The ‘Thurloe State Papers' were discovered in the ceiling of the attic at No. 13 (now destroyed) in the reign of William III. Thurloe is buried in the crypt of the nearby Lincoln's Inn chapel.
