Plaque

June Aylward

Inscription

On this site June Aylward (1891 - 1965) established the first antique shop on Portobello Road.

Site: June Aylward (1 memorial)

W11, Portobello Road, 115

The gives 1950 as the year in which Aylward opened her shop, while Wikipedia reckons "antiques dealers arrived in the late 1940s and '50s". Whatever, it's been a lively antiques market for as long as most people can remember and this plaque has been here since at least 2005.

See Susan Garth for a related claim.

2025: Mr Little put us on to the excellent where we found: "Nos. 115-117 were probably built as a block ... No. 115 is believed to have been the address of the first antique dealer to move into the Portobello Road, June Aylward (1891-1965), who opened her shop around 1950. There is a plaque to her on the building."

This is a loosely-worded plaque. We don't think it really means ALL the men lost in both World Wars, just those that worked at the Brewery.
