Lewisham Union

Erection date: 10/10/1894

Inscription

The Guardians of the Poor of the Lewisham Union
The foundation stone of this Infirmary was laid by the Right Revd. the Lord Bishop of Lichfield on 2nd July 1892 and the building was formally opened by the Revd. Canon R. R. Bristow M.A. on 10th October 1894.
Chairman: The Revd. R. R. Bristow M.A. Canon of Rochester
Vice Chairmen: B. Poulter J.P. and Major General F. Mould
{Followed by the names of 24 guardians. See Commemorated subjects}
W. Johnson & Co. Limd. - Builders
M. C. Mott - Clerk to the Guardians
A. & C. Harston F.S.I. F.R.I.B.A. - Architects

This plaque was originally erected on the newly-built separate Infirmary to the north of the workhouse. This suggests to us that the Infirmary consisted of 4 blocks, of which only the east-most (the red and yellow brick building on the High Street) remains - see Lewisham Hospital for a photo.

The list of Guardian is separated into: Ex Officio Guardians (7) who are guardians by virtue of holding another office, and those who are elected guardians for either Eltham (6) or Lewisham (11).

Site: Lewisham Union and Riverside Lewisham (2 memorials)

SE13, Lewisham High Street, Riverside, University Hospital Lewisham

These two plaques are in the entrance to the Riverside building, "orange zone".
