Plaque

Mark Gertler - E1

Erection date: 1975

Inscription

Mark Gertler, 1891 - 1939, painter, lived here.
Greater London Council

Site: Mark Gertler - E1 (2 memorials)

E1, Elder Street, 32

This is a lovely 18th century cobbled street in which the blue plaque is garishly anachronistically. The plaque was erected in 1975 when Spitalfields was not valued the way it is now. We would prefer one with more respect for its surroundings, such as Priestley's plaque in Highgate.

The pavement plaque is immediately below the blue plaque. Installed (or possibly re-installed) between Sept 2014 and Dec 2016.
