This sundial has Roman numerals for winter time and Arabic ones for summer time. It tells local sun time (time as it is) here at Queen's Walk. Our watches show GMT (time as we would like it to be) as established by Act of Parliament in 1880. The table below shows watch time of solar noon - add 1 hour for summer time. At this time, a line of light shines through the gnomon and along the centre line of the dial.
This sundial commemorates the opening by the Queen on 9 June 1977 of the London Silver Jubilee Walkway, which passes this spot, and the William Curtis Ecological Park, the first urban ecological park in the world which stood on this site from 1976 to 1985, and of Max Nicholson, who was the initiator of both of them.

The sundial's own website has been usurped by the usual smut, but has a report of the unveiling. The sundial is on a concrete plinth, one of a pair on this section of the Walk. The article explains that they are for water taps and the sundial maker spotted that one could do double duty, supporting this memorial to his father. The plinths are in corners of the river wall. The other is to the east and has a blanking plate on top.
