[On the plinth of the monument:} 
1914 - 1919 
To the glorious memory of men of Middlesex and the Middlesex Regiment who by service on land, sea and in the air gave their lives for their country.

Unveiled by Lieut General Sir Ivor Maxse.   explains why this memorial is here and confirms that the model for the main figure was Robert Ryder, VC.
