Mitre Square information panel

Inscription

You are standing within the cloister of Holy Trinity Priory, the earliest and among the richest of the City of London's monastic houses.

{We have placed the rest of this text on our page for Holy Trinity Priory or our page for Catherine Eddowes, whose body was found in Mitre Square in the early hours of 30 September 1888.}

This 2025 photo (with someone seated) shows the new information panel, about the Priory and Catherine Eddowes, and the blue plaque, in its new position, on the south-east wall of St James's Passage as it skirts the edge of the newly-laid out Mitre Square.

EC3, Mitre Square, St James's Passage

This square occupies that space that was used by the cloisters of the priory. The south corner of the square is where in 1888 the body of Catherine Eddowes was found, one of Jack the Ripper's victims.

This area has been redeveloped since we visited in 2012 (our photo shows it looking very drab). At that time the Holy Trinity plaque was on the (blue) north-east side of the square. We'll keep those old photos as a record of how London once was and how it's changing.
