Site: New Southgate gas holder (1 memorial)
N11, Inverforth Road, Millennium Green
From nearby information boards we learnt that these are 2 of the 20 finials from the gas holder which of Station Road and Pinkham Way (the North Circular).
The gas works operated 1859-1972 when most of the site was demolished. The last and largest of the 3 holders on site, built in 1912, continued in use for gas storage until 2001. It was finally demolished in September 2020 and we have the local history group to thank for requesting that these finials to be salvaged, restored and displayed here. The finials are cast iron and each weighs 350kg.
names the company as the Southgate and Colney Hatch Gas Light and Coke Company, set up in 1858. See this (towards the left of the bottom edge). has some photos of what it calls the New Southgate Gas Works.
