The Oakley Small Arms Works moved to Acton from Chelsea in 1904, and was situated at the North West part of the park, where the small meadows, and Wilkinson Way, are today.
During the First World War (1914 - 1918) over two million bayonets were made on the site by the Wilkinson Sword Company, who also made bicycles, motor bikes, cars and tractors, which were trialled on the land, part of which was sold to Acton UDC in 1908, for use as Public Open Space, and became known as Southfield Rec.
