Plaque

Oliver Goldsmith - SE5

Inscription

Oliver Goldsmith, 1730 - 1774, flamboyant playwright, author of "She Stoops to Conquer".
London Borough of Southwark - Voted by the people

Site: Oliver Goldsmith - SE5 (1 memorial)

SE5, Peckham Road, Oliver Goldsmith Primary School

The plaque fails to explain why it is here, or why this school has this name, which is probably the same thing.  Trying to answer this question, : "The house at Peckham, where Goldsmith was employed as tutor in a school under a Dr. Milner, and where he wrote the best part of his "Vicar of Wakefield," was pulled down in 1876." and "The school was afterwards {after Goldsmith left in 1758, we assume} called in his honour Goldsmith's House. An avenue of trees in the grounds was once known as "Goldsmith's Walk," but it has long since passed away."  We can't locate Dr Milner's school so we have no idea if this Peckham Road school, built in 1899, is on the same site.
