Penge war memorial

Inscription

{Main plaque, on base of the cross, inside a laurel wreath:}
Erected by the residents of Penge to the glory of God in proud memory of those who made the supreme sacrifice in the Great War, 1914 - 1918.

{Plaque on the lower end of the cross:}
Also in memory of the men and women of HM forces, civil defence and civilian population of Penge who lost their lives in the second world war, 1939 - 1945.

{Three plaques around the plinth are inscribed with 400 names. See Subjects commemorated.)

{Small plaque on the lower plinth:}
Also remembered with grateful appreciation: those who, since the second world war have given their lives in conflicts and peace keeping missions throughout the world.

Unveiled by Francis P. Hodes Esq. JP, Chairman of the Penge Urban District Council 1921 - 22.

The people of Penge in partnership with the London Borough of Bromley erected these plaques to commemorate the members of the armed forces and civilians who lost their lives in World War II.

The Second World War 1939 - 1945 Civilians

The WW2 civilian list identifies 14 people who worked in civil defence and what their role was. Usually lists of civilian dead give the first names and the ages of the dead so one can see how many were women and children, but here all we have are initials, which is a shame.
