Plaque

Richmond Society's 50th Anniversary

Inscription

{Around the edge:}
Richmond Society's 50th Anniversary, 1957 - 2007
{At the centre: a needle pointing north, and in the surrounding 4 quadrants labelled images of:}
Kew Gardens {the pagoda between trees};
The Old Palace {the entrance arch};
View of the river {from the top of the hill, at the bollarded path};
View to St Paul's {the dome through an arched gate}.

Both the views depicted on the plaque are "protected".  Referring to the view of the river, explains that "... the 1902 Richmond, Ham and Petersham Open Spaces Act ... made Richmond Hill the first (and only) British view protected by Parliamentary legislation."  Since then a number of views of London have been , and the map there suggests that the longest distance one is that of St Paul's from Richmond Hill.
