WC2, Strand, Adelphi Terrace, 4
Constructed by the Adams' building firm, Robert and James Adam were among the earliest residents at Adelphi Terrace, occupying No.4 from 1772, with David Garrick their next door neighbour at no. 5.
No.4 was one of the many Adelphi buildings demolished amid great public outcry to make way for the Art Deco 'New Adelphi' in the 1930s. Of the Terrace only no. 11 survives.
This photograph of the building, taken by the Greater London Council in the 1920s, is published with the permission of The London Archives. TLA reference code . It shows both the Garrick and Adam plaques in situ, the latter to the right of the lamppost. Our page for the Garrick plaque has a photo of the whole building.
