In remembrance of Samuel Gurney, who died the 5th of June 1856, erected by his fellow parishioners and friends, 1861.
When the ear heard him then it blessed him.
The Biblical quote is from Job 29:11.
Water was supplied to the basins on the north and south faces by these unusual spouts. At the centre of the marble flower is a brass leaf with a button at the middle and a lion's head below from whence came the water.
Gurney's son, also named Samuel, created the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association in 1859 so it is not surprising that a water fountain was chosen to commemorate Gurney Senior.
