Plaque

Sir Otto Beit

Inscription

{Above Beit's head:}
MDCCCLXV - MCMXXX {1865 - 1930}

{In the panel below:}
Sir Otto Beit, Bt, FRS. This tablet is erected to commemorate the value of his services as a governor and the munificence of his benefactions to the Imperial College of Science & Technology.

"The munificence of his benefactions" - we just don't write plaques like that anymore.

Site: Sir Otto Beit (1 memorial)

SW7, Prince Consort Road, Beit Quadrangle entrance porch

The plaque is in the archway between the street and the quad from where we took our photo.  Otto Beit funded the construction of all the buildings around this Beit Quad: the Students' Union building and the hostel.  Built 1910-11, Wikipedia believes this is the oldest Student Union building in England.  Designed by Sir Aston Webb.
