Plaque

Stonebridge Estate

Erection date: 22/3/1994

Inscription

This plaque was unveiled on 22 March 1994 by Cllr. John McCafferty, leader of Hackney Council, to commemorate the redevelopment of Stonebridge Estate. It was the Council's largest housing development in the 1980s with 138 new homes replacing eight tenement blocks, dating back to the 1930s, built by Shoreditch Borough Council. The new homes were designed in consultation with local residents by architects from the Directorate of Environmental Services and built by the Directorate of Construction Services.
The construction included one of the largest building apprenticeship schemes in the country. Most of the 18 Hackney trainees now work for the Council.

At first we thought the plaque was deliberately mounted at a jaunty angle but then we saw that a screw has gone missing.

The Stonebridge area takes its name from a stone bridge over a tributary of the Hackney Brook which used to run roughly west-east some distance to the north.
