Bust

The George

Erection date: 1897

Inscription

{The relief bust is surrounded with a scrolled frame. Above are three feathers, bound with a ribbon bearing the motto "Ich Dien". Below are crossed laurel branches around a "G". Below all this, in a separate panel, a ribbon announces "The George". And below that, in a separate panel "1897". This is all part of the original decorative facade of the building.}

There has been a public house of this name here since at least 1739 but the bust is a very good likeness of George IV, regent 1811 - 1820 and king from 1820 - 1830. And this was erected in 1897. Go figure.
