{On both long sides:}
Metropolitan Drinking Fountain and Cattle Trough Association

{The northern end has lost a plaque. The southern end is inscribed:}
In memoriam Robert Trotter Esq, 1877 

says this was originally erected in 1881 outside The Plough in Clapham, which , to the east of the trough's current site.

This trough is fenced in, on its own, in quite a large wooded pasture.
