Upper North Street School WW1 bomb - trees

Erection date: 1/4/2014

Inscription

'A green thought in a green shade'
Mayor Lutfur Rahman & the children of Mayflower School planted this black poplar and elms to mark the centenary of World War I & in sad remembrance of the 18 children who died when the school here was bombed during that war.
1st April 2014

Marvell wrote 'The Garden', the poem which is quoted here.

Site: Upper North Street School WW1 bomb - trees (1 memorial)

E14, East India Dock Road, Trinity Gardens

Mayflower Primary School occupies the large, mainly Victorian, building to the north of this open space. It was previously the LCC Upper North Street school on which the bomb fell. The windows that can be seen in the photos of the bomb damage could be windows in the Victorian building, and from Grundy Street you can see a modern section inserted into the middle of the Victorian building. Seems likely that that is the site of the bomb.

2025: has an informative post on this garden, not focusing on the school.
