William Blake - W1, S. Molton Street

Inscription

William Blake, poet and painter, lived here. Born 1757, died 1827.
The Corporation of the City of London

Site: William Blake - W1, S. Molton Street (1 memorial)

W1, South Molton Street, 17

Initially we were puzzled why the Corporation of the City of London would erect a plaque so far to the west of its patch, but our colleague, Alan Patient, found out. This area used to be the Conduit Mead(e) Estate which was owned and managed by the Corporation.

William and his wife Catherine lived above this shop 1803-21. Here he created ‘Milton A Poem’ and ‘Jerusalem the Emanation of the Giant Albion’, and wrote the words to 'Jerusalem'.

2025: The reported that the flat in which the Blakes lived was slated to be converted from offices into a a private residence.  The WBF are instead campaigning for a William Blake Centre.
