SE1, Shad Thames, 36, Butler's Wharf Building

Butler's Wharf, completed in 1873, was designed by James Tolley and Daniel Dale as a shipping wharf and warehouse complex, for goods unloaded from ships using the port of London. 1975-8 the artists' space at 2B Butler's Wharf was a key venue for early UK video art and performance art, including Kevin Atherton

Jarman's premises, 1973-9, were at the eastern end of the building, in block A1, on the third floor. Here he could paint large canvases and make mainly short films for art galleries. During this time he also made Sebastiane (1976) and Jubilee (1978).

The building was converted to high-end apartments, offices and a restaurant in the 1980s.
