Albert Newmarch

Private Albert Christopher Newmarch.

He was born in 1918, the eighth of the eleven children of Thomas Alfred William Newmarch (1877-1945) and Mary Newmarch née Cherrington (1880-1968). His birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1918 in the Shoreditch registration district. His father was a stick mount fitter in the umbrella trade and electoral registers from 1925 to 1939 show his parents residing at 14 Shaftesbury Street, Hoxton, London, N1.

He enlisted in the 4th Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte of Wales's), service number 5340103, and was part of the British Expeditionary Force sent to Belgium. He was killed in action, aged 21 years, on 29 May 1940 during the retreat to Dunkirk, France, and is buried in , in the Zuidschote Churchyard of Sint-Leonarduskerk, Zuidschote-Dorp, 8904 Ieper, Belgium.
