Ann Eltenton was born on 3 January 1933, one of the four children of George Charles Eltenton (1906-1991) and Ada Dorothea Eltenton née Hamilton (1904-2001). Her birth was registered in the 1st quarter of 1933 in the South Manchester Registration District, Lancashire (now Greater Manchester).
Having changed her name to Anya Linden, she married Igor Tamarin in the 3rd quarter of 1958 in the Kensington Registration District, London, but divorced him in 1962 on the grounds of adultery.
She married John Davan Sainsbury (1927-2022) in 1963 and when he was created a Baron in 1989 she became The Lady Sainsbury of Preston Candover. She became a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - Civil Division (CBE) for services to Arts Education and Ballet in the 2003 New Year Honours List.
She and her husband had three children: Sarah J. Sainsbury (b.1964); John Julian Sainsbury (b.1966) and Mark Leonard Sainsbury (b.1969).
