Bertha Joseph

Bertha Joseph

Since 1976, Bertha Joseph has been one of the pioneers and the secretary of Notting Hill Carnival. Bertha served as a Councillor for Brent Council for 24 years and made history in 1998/99 as the first African-Caribbean Mayor of Brent. In 2009, she became the first African-Caribbean Deputy Chairman of the London Fire & Emergency Planning Authority, breaking barriers in another significant role.

In her work as Business Unit Manager in the London Borough of Southwark, Bertha led efforts to address hate crime, earning two National Local Authority Race Awards for her outstanding contributions. She was also awarded the Borough Commander's Commendation in 1996 for her leadership in resolving hate crime incidents in collaboration with the police.

In 2022, she was awarded the Metropolitan Police’s Excellence Award for her voluntary service as a Police Ambassador during Notting Hill Carnival, further cementing her legacy as a community leader and advocate.

A former beauty pageant titleholder of St. Croix US Virgin Islands, Bertha is thrilled to bring her expertise to the judging panel at this year's Miss Caribbean UK beauty pageant.

7 October 2024, Bertha was honoured with The Black History Month Partnership Award by Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley QPM. This prestigious award recognises her dedication to empowering and uplifting the community, striving for positive change, and helping to break down barriers between the Metropolitan Police Service and the Black community.
