Edith McMullen was born on 7 July 1888, one of the seven children of Henry McMullen (1860-1921) and Selina McMullen née Stant (1859-1927). Her birth was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1888 in the West Derby Registration District, Lancashire. On 22 August 1888 she was baptised in St Bridget's Church, Wavertree, Liverpool, Lancashire, where in the baptismal register her family were shown to be living at 140 Wellington Road, Wavertree and that her father was a joiner.
She was listed as aged 2 years on the census that was undertaken on 5 April 1891. She was residing at 10 Kellitt Road, Wavertree, the home of her paternal grandparents, Robert and Elizabeth McMullen, with her parents and two siblings: Clara McMullen (1883-1918) and Edward McMullen (b. circa 1886). Her father was described as a carpenter and her grandfather was a labourer.
She was shown in the census that was compiled on 31 March 1901 as aged 12 years and living at 10 Cornwall Street, Edge Hill, Liverpool, with her parents and three siblings: Clara McMullen; Selina McMullen (1891-1968) and Harry McMullen (1892-1968). Her father was described as a foreman joiner.
When her father completed his census return form on 2 April 1911 she was shown as aged 22 years and a restaurant waitress. She was living in a six roomed property at 78 Snaefell Avenue, Tuebrook, Liverpool, with her parents and two of her siblings: Selina McMullen – a mother's help and Harry McMullen - a shipping agent's shipping clerk. Her father described himself as an architect's clerk of works and stated that his wife had given birth to seven children but that only four were still alive.
The census return form completed by her father on 19 June 1921 listed her as aged 32 years, 4 months and a nurse working from home. She was still residing at 78 Snaefell Avenue, Liverpool, with her parents and her brother Harry McMullen - a shipping clerk employed by Wilson Son & Co. at 5 Chapel Street, Liverpool. Her father listed himself as a clerk of works for building works employed by Boots Pure Drug Company of Nottingham.
Electoral registers from 1932 to 1939 show her listed at the Infirmary at the Royal Hospital, London, SW3. She was shown as a trained hospital nurse in the England and Wales Register that was compiled on 23 September 1939. It confirmed that she was born on 7 July 1888, that she was a single woman and that she was resident at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.
Her death, aged 52 years, on 16 April 1941 was registered in the 2nd quarter of 1941 in the Chelsea Registration District, London and her on . Probate records confirm that her address had been 64 Muirhead Avenue, West Derby, Liverpool, and that she had died at Gordon House, The Royal Hospital, Chelsea. Administration, with a will, was granted on 2 August 1941 to her sister, Selina Parker, the wife of Thomas Parker. Her estate totalled £581-17s-3d.
She is shown as "EDITH McMULLEN. LONG WARD NURSING SISTER." on a memorial plaque in Middle Court, Royal Hospital Chelsea, Royal Hospital Road, London, SW3. She is also commemorated on the , on the and in the the that is kept just outside the entrance to St George's Chapel at the west end of Westminster Abbey.
