Frederic Clare Melhado

Frederic Clare Melhado

Frederic Nicholas Clare Melhado was born about 1862 in Maida Hill, London, the younger son of Michael Clare Melhado (1814-1879) and Julia Presbury Melhado née Steele (1825-1910). On 12 March 1862 he was baptised at St Saviour's Church, Paddington, where the baptismal register shows the family were living at 4 Clarendon Gardens, Paddington.

The 1871 census shows him as a scholar living at 9 Newton Terrace, Paddington, with his parents, his elder brother Ernest William K. Melhado (1857-1878) and a female servant. His father's occupation was listed as a wine merchant.

Electoral registers from 1887 to 1890 show him at 75 Shirland Road, Paddington, whilst in the 1891 census he is recorded as the Secretary and Superintendent of the Middlesex Hospital, Marylebone, residing there with a butler, a housekeeper and a cook. On 18 March 1892 he was initiated as a freemason in the Middlesex Lodge No.143 that met at The Albion Tavern, Aldersgate Street, London.

He married Aldelaide Elizabeth Catherina Dufresne (born 23 July 1871 in Bray, Ireland) and the marriage was registered in the 3rd quarter of 1893 in the Marylebone registration district. The 1901 census shows him living at 29 Circus Road, St John's Wood, with his wife, his widowed mother and a housemaid.

Telephone directories list him at 29 Circus Road, St John's Wood from 1904 to 1912 and the 1911 census confirms him still in the same occupation, childless and living at this address with his wife, a cook and a parlour-maid. Telephone directories from 1913 until his death list him at 3e Portman Mansions, Mayfair.

According to probate records he died, aged 54 years, on 18 October 1916 at 8 Somers Place, Marylebone. On 7 December 1916 probate was granted to his widow and his effects totalled £595-10s-8d.
